Diabetic Eye Assessment

The standard of care for all patients being monitored with diabetes is an annual diabetic exam. This includes a dilated eye exam where we perform additional testing including optical coherence tomography (OCT) and retina photos. Having diabetes can require extra care during your annual eye exams as changes to blood glucose can affect vision and eyes. Our doctors are able to treat accordingly and coordinate with your family physician to reduce the risk of diabetic retinopathy, which damages the blood vessels in the retina of the eye.

Regular eye exams are an important first step to diagnose and treat eye conditions before they progress. After your eye exam, your optometrist will have you return for a diabetic exam where we perform additional testing. This testing is covered by Alberta Health Care.
